How did the tradition of birthdays begin?

Birthdays are a time for closed ones to come together and celebrate you, the anniversary of your birth, and another year of your life. But the origin of birthdays is not that simple. In fact, birthdays didn’t begin until people created calendars. Early civilizations had no way to tell the time other than by using the moon, sun, or some other important event. This made it difficult for them to pay attention to the anniversary of a person’s birth. They began marking changes in time when they noticed the change in seasons. This helped them create the first calendars, which marked time changes and other special days.

The tradition of using birthday candles began with the Greeks. In the past, the Greeks would bring offerings such as moon-shaped cakes with some candles on them to pay respect to Artemis, who is the lunar goddess. The candles were the symbol of the light from the moon, Artemis’ beauty, and the act of sending a sign to the goddess. Blowing out the candles with a wish is a way of sending that message to the gods.

Greek people believed that celebrating birthdays is a way to protect a person from evil spirits. Lighting up the candles can push the darkness away.  On  these occasions, friends and family often gathered around the birthday person and protected them from harm with blessings and wishes.

31. Birthdays begin when ancient people know how to tell the time by using the sun.

33. The Greeks would offer Artemis with moon-shaped cakes with candles on them to give respect to her.

Learning and thinking differently

A. Duy

I found it difficult to concentrate at school, which really affected my grades and self-confidence. I had to work and try very hard to keep up with other students. I think that pushing myself has helped me become the person that I am today. Having ADHD inspired such a work ethic in me that I may not have had. Moreover, ADHD taught me to have a habit of doing daily things that help me focus. I often have a quiet time every day for meditation.

B. Minh

When you spend your entire childhood struggling to do things the way everyone else does and getting bullied because you can’t, it’s easy to believe that dyslexia had no benefits. I grew up thinking it was just a sickness that kept me in special education classes. It took me a long time to realize that my learning disorder actually makes me a more creative designer. My hope is that with a greater understanding of dyslexia, no child will ever have to feel bad because of it.

C. Huyen

I learn and think differently, and have always had significant problems with handwriting. Thanks to computers, I don’t have to write everything by hand — although they didn’t exist when I was a kid. I should point out that my dysgraphia hasn’t stopped me from writing hit songs. Handwriting difficulty has nothing to do with IQ or creativity.

21. Who maintains a healthy habit because of their learning disorder? ________

22. Who is a songwriter? ________

23. Who overcame their learning disorder by putting more effort into studying? ________

24. Which person had writing difficulties? ________

Unique house-warming gifts around the world

Text A: India

Indian house-warming gifts can get a little bit messy. In Indian culture, it’s common to bless a new house by mixing milk and rice together and boiling the mixture until it overflows. This ritual is the symbol of wealth and a long life. If you really don’t mind making a mess, another house-warming gift that you can offer the homeowners is a cow. When you bring the cow inside the new home, remember to put on a holy garland around its neck. This seems strange when you turn your house into a farm, but it makes a lot of sense for cows which are important in Indian culture.

Text B: Russia

Bringing bread and salt into a new home is a nice house-warming gift for they have meaningful symbols. A gift of bread helps make sure that the homeowners will never go hungry, and salt will offer a life full of flavours. This ritual took place in Russia a while ago and now many countries also practise this tradition as well. What’s more interesting is that even astronauts from space bring bread and salt before they go inside the Space Station. Another interesting ritual in Russia is letting your cat enter the house before you do. The reason the Russians do this is that they believe this will bring good luck for the owners. A bank in Russia even lent cats to its customers for 2 hours each time.

This ritual took place in Russia a while ago and now many countries also practis     e this tradition as well.

C. Huyền

I learn and think differently, and have always had significant problems with handwriting. Thanks to computers, I don’t have to write everything by hand — although they didn’t exist when I was a kid.
